Video: Man versus Wild…Radio-Controlled Car

Undoubtedly, the video you're about to see would have elicited a chuckle or two even if the radio controlled missile-car hit a by-stander, but the fact that it knocked the person holding the remote control off his feet (we mean that literally) and into the air makes it twice as fun to watch.

See the incoming RC for yourself in the video after the break.

Ford Ditches CD Players on its New European Models

As digital music sales rise, compact discs seem to be heading the way of the cassette –for those of you old enough to remember them, that is. For example, in the UK digital sales account for 98% percent of the market. That’s evolution: just as the cassette made the 8-track player obsolete and then gave its place to CD-players, now purely digital content is making CD players a thing of the past. The Hackable Car, or Why Technology is Making Our Cars More Vulnerable to Attack

The modern automobile is a microcosm for our networked society. Everything from the brakes to the dual-zone climate control and from the windscreen wipers to the CD player is connected through a Controller-Area-Network (CAN) bus.

Like the nerves in our bodies, this network passes information from one component to another. It allows the anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control to work in unison, disconnects the cruise control when you step on the accelerator and allows the headlights to switch themselves on in low light conditions.

TRW’s Retractable Steering Wheel to Help the Elderly and the Obese

Assuming you haven’t been living under a rock for the past ten years, you’ll know that much of the first world’s population is getting both older and fatter. In response to this burgeoning epidemic – which affects nations as diverse as the U.K., U.S.A., Australia and China – TRW Automotive has developed a steering wheel which retracts completely into the dashboard at the touch of a button. Plastic is Fantastic: 1:24 Scale Supercar Exotics Encased In Resin

Here’s something you don’t see every day: a 1970's style resin “sculpture” made by an unknown French artist and featuring various 1:24 scale Ferraris.

There’s also a Lamborghini Diablo, Jaguar XJ220 and Bugatti EB110 in there among others. Props to anyone who can help us identify the rest. The unusual item is being sold by Mantiques Modern [sic] of New York.

For details on price, you’ll have to contact the dealer, but something tells us it won’t be cheap… More photos of the artsy piece in the gallery after the break.

There you HAVEit: VW Renders Drivers (almost) Obsolete

We’ve seen them in science-fiction films: cars that drive themselves. And, as car enthusiasts, we hoped that this invention will never be realized, or at least not in our lifespan. But is seems like Volkswagen and the EU have other plans.

At the final presentation for the HAVEit (Highly Automated Vehicle for Intelligent Transport) project in the Swedish city of Boras, the German car company presented the “Temporary Auto Pilot”, or TAP, a system that allows the car to semi-automatically drive itself up to speeds of 130 km/h (80 mph) on motorways, with the driver simply monitoring the vehicle.

SONY ERiCSSON XPERiA PLAY

What kind of gamer in his right mind would not want this?

It's an Android smartphone and a PSP in one!

One great thing I have heard about the XPERIA Play is sound quality.  Well I would expect that from Sony Ericsson, since my old SE phones have great sound quality, too.  And that's perfect for gaming!

Reviews also commend the great video resolution on this phone, especially when playing games.  Game graphics are of much better quality than the PSP's, although available games as of the moment are limited.  Hope they release more games that are Playstation-esque, and not just those standard point-shoot, run-jump, cheap phone games of the late technological era.

Camera shots are pretty decent, too, at 5megapixels.  This baby also shoots HD videos [Click here for more SE XPERIA Play specs]

Much cons that I have heard about this phone is the extra bulk (well maybe because of the slide-in gaming pad) and a not-so-sleek design.  Maybe an improvised version of this phone in the future would fix that.

Still I think this is the best phone for me.  It would be such a bulk to bring a phone, a PSP, a digital camera, and a laptop when I am on-the-go.

As for now, my dear XPERIA Play, continue remaining in my dreams as I work my ass off to buy you.. [you might also want to consider lowering in the future]..

MY CHRiSTMAS WiSH THiS YEAR: A NOKiA C7

    C7.

Well it does sound like a new high-tech nuclear bomb in another James Bond movie, but the latest addition to the Nokia family, the new Nokia C7 smartphone, is a 'bomb' in itself -- packed with a lot of cool features that techie guys like me would surely die to have for Christmas!

    1. A smudge-free, fingerprint-free sleek finish -- constructed from polished stainless steel and glass, the phone itself shines up with that cool, savvy look.  And I firmly believe that my smudge-producing hands would be capable of retaining it's savviness while it's in my unpredictable care.  So yay for that!

    2. It's touchscreen! Yay for technology!  We are already living the era of touchscreen technology, (everybody knows that) and sooner or later, phones with manual keypads would be as historical as the dinosaurs.  Already have my own touchscreen phone, and it's my first time using one.  Seriously, the switch from a non-touchscreen phone is weird and takes time to get used to, but it's fun and exciting to have and play with new technology right at your fingertips.  And believe me, I getting the hang of it.  What more if I'd own a C7! My fingers would be the most exercised part of my body from then on.

    3. Integrated social network. Yay for this one, too.  Almost everyone has a Facebook or a Twitter account, including me.  So integrating Facebook with the C7 is one cool feature - updating my profile, viewing my friends' pictures, or simply changing my status wherever I am by a few simply clicks, er.. touches, in a very user-friendly and high-resolution interface.  I am actually having problems with my current phone (let's name my phone Fifi), as the Facebook feature is so lame.  The C7 would improve my social network life tenfold!

Aside from the mentioned three favorite features of mine, the Nokia C7 also has an 8MP camera and HD video.

If you still don't have an idea about the C7, just think a Nokia N8 minus the 12MP cam and HDMI slot at a lower price!

[NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC: News might come out informing the general public that I don't need the Nokia C7.  Rest assured this is only a plot against me having a C7 in my own hands, as people are already concerned about the chaos I would be causing, especially bombarding their FB and Twitter accounts with status updates]

So... do I really really really really really want to have a Nokia C7 for Christmas?

    Need I answer that? =P

AND THERE WAS NET (PART II)

Yes! Nothing beats up an internet connection of your own (Goodbye neighbor-WiFi leeching!). When the phone rang this morning, I definitely felt it was them (that's what you call self-induced premonition).

Surely it was them, telling me that they would be coming to install my Globe WiMAX. Had to buy a very long metal pipe for the external antenna (since two big houses were on the way of my precious WiMAX signal, grrr!). WiMAX is the latest in wireless internet technology, far more different form 3G and WiFi. What I'm after is better service connection anyway, and I hope WiMAX is up for it.

Connection is fine at rougly 500kbps (used speedtest.net on this one, don't know if it's reliable, but if Globe Customer Service rep says so). Now, I can finally play Ragnarok online, blog like hell, and play Mafia Wars in Facebook. Too bad 500kbps is not enough for me, and I had to report to Customer Service 2 hours after installation. My 1mbps subscription should definitely give me a right for a connection speed between 500 and 1000 kbps, agree?

Maybe I should I buy a longer metal pipe antenna then, since burning two big houses would not be an option.. The latter sounds promising, though, hahaha!

AND THERE WAS NET!

This is going to be one major post in the history of my ridiculous blog! My home lappy is internet-packed at last. I don't consider it a dream come true, though.

One, I'm only leeching from my landlord's son's 384kbps internet via wireless router. Two, it's only 384kbps! Three, it's wireless, which is so not good when signal is concerned, considering I live at a separate house from the source. Fourth, IT'S ONLY 384kbps! And fifth, IT'S ONLY 384kbps.. (sigh).
There are a lot of things that I want to do -- The internet is endless. A friend told me it's just a new-connection hype, but after a week or so, I would get bored. Me? Bored? Yeah right.. My longest net-to-face encounter has been 18hours straight (and it was just in a cafe!), how much more if I get my slimey hands into my own connection.. HEAVEN HAVEN!..

    My HEAVEN HAVEN list:
    1. I'd get back to my classical love -- writing my brains out, and trashing more into this blog.
    2. Ragnarok Online, I'm baaaaaack!
    3. Friendster now and then
    4. Unlimited streaming of my fave anime series
    5. Okay okay, Facebook! Promised my friends I'd check it out if I get my own connection
    6. Try out other online games..
    7. More online games..
    8. Games..
    9. Come to think of it, I never got tired of my Neopets account, wehehehe..
    10. And more games!

And why do I have to endure all of this with a mere wireless 384kbps?

Damn Globelines.. Told me there were no more vacant slots for broadband in our area. So someone should disconnect their service in order for me to fit in. Please install more of your whatchoomacallit globeline homeuser broadband slot thingies in our area so I can enjoy 1Mbps wired internet for 995 bucks a month! Or else for desperate measures, I have to borrow my landlord's shears and look for delectable broadband lines in the vicinity and make that necessary slot myself.

O HAiL WiFi!

I just had to write this post while I am here in Jollibee near Silliman University for a dose of one of technology's greatest breakthrough - WiFi! At last, me and my 2-year old laptop were able to enjoy (for the first time in the history of my existence!) free wireless internet. Actually I had to order something to get the passkey for the connection, so I went for a spaghetti and burger combo.

Bless me (Or should I say, shame on me!) for not experiencing this phenomena before! It felt like I was born just now.. and I call myself a gizmo guy for years??? Talking about humiliation from within. Of course I have heard about WiFi. I just never had the chance to try it.

The connection is actually blazing fast! Ingnorance really pays off, ehehe.. gives that extra feeling of, uh.. discovery? And it feels really gooooood..

I just had to try it. Erwin, the devil disguised as a part-time clinical instructor in a nearby university, told me to drag my computer out of the neanderthal era and step to the wonders of WiFi right here at Jollibee! Too bad my WiFi lasts proportionally with my laptop's battery span, and that's about less than 2 hours or so..

Well I have to make use of that span.. Still have jobs to apply, resumes to send, and Naruto episodes to stream.. =)

    Ciao..
