    To be an authentic food enthusiast, one has to have a vast experience on various dishes -- from the plain and simple to the unique and classy, up to the odd and the uncommon. To a food enthusiast, the culture of a place is completely described from the food they are known.


    Of course, the Filipino culture has its share of popular authentic streetfood, prepared ihaw style (charcoal-cooked). Chicken feet (adidas) for example. Our Chinese historical influence gave birth to delicious local chicken feet, all but with a touch of Filipino taste. It was just lately when I tried tasting it, finally found out why my aunts from Germany look for it whenever they visit the Philippines. Perfectly-prepared chicken feet is very tasty, and the meat slides easily away from the feet bones when they touch your mouth, yum!

    Then there's also my favorite -- isaw (chicken intestines) ! I have also tried the pork intestine version of isaw, and it tastes great just the same. There's also chicken neck, chicken skin, chicken liver, chicken head (whew!), well actually almost all parts of the chicken becomes streetfood, with feathers as an exception of course (let's see you try to eat that).

    Next we have the popular balut eggs -- boiled duck eggs with nearly-developed embryos inside. Balut, which is also a delicacy in some other parts of Southeast Asia, is sold mostly during the night by vendors and is a well-known protein-rich pampalakas ng tuhod (knee-strengthener -- an idiom for something that gives more stamina), as claimed by our grandfathers and local drunkards. I eat balut every now and then, though honestly not all of it -- I still have to muster the courage to eat the embryo inside -- with the duckbill, underdeveloped feathers and all, waah!

    The there's my recent discovery -- betamax (coagulated blood). It was just lately when I tried a morsel, and yes it was uniquely tasty, pretty much like tofu in texture and barbecuey in flavor.

    And there are a lot more of these stuff out there, still unknown to my tastebuds. Haven't even mentioned international delicacies worth citing (well, ok I love Japanese sashimi [raw tuna meat] -- I just can't bear not mentioning it here, haha!). Some people are disgusted about such unique food ideas.. well it's their choice. I just feel sorry as to why they deny and limit themselves the opportunity of being able to taste something unique as culture.

    To a food enthusiast, food discovery is endless. Food discovery is an adventure.

    These Ukrainian kids are so adorable and highly disciplined, their performance is incredibly fascinating -- and they look like music box dancing pieces that came to life (thus the title of this post =P).. Damn they can actually do such feats! As a performer myself (well maybe once upon a time in my college years as a hiphop and popjazz dancer), I am so jealous to not being able to do those.

    I think they are just around 6 or 7 years old. If I had known I would be dancing in my college years, I would have had practiced myself like crazy when I was of their age. Hehehe, well too late for that, I can't even split! Let alone a headstand! Gaah!

FACEBOOK OR FRiENDSTER?

    Multiply, Myspace, Friendster, Facebook.. Socializing websites have become a vital part of the internet-literate's virtual identity. Post pictures, update friends, play games, page customization-- these are only some of the things one can do. In the virtual world of Internet, it becomes your signature -- your personal profile for everyone to see.

    At the boom of Myspace in the US years ago, at the same time Friendster also found its way into the hearts of Filipino netsurfers. Then came Multiply, and then Friendster's greatest rival in the country - Facebook.

    I must admit that when everyone had a Friendster account, I declined to join the bandwagon. It took me a year after that before I finally decided to create one (originally for the sole purpose of finding old friends in high school and elementary years). Now I post pictures like crazy!

    Same situation went for Facebook. When everyone I knew in Friendster made Facebook accounts, I also declined to follow them for the reason that this internet-socializing trend has become an unstoppable in-out fad, and I hate turning myself into a no-choice fad follower.

    A year after Facebook's popularity rise, I was still in Friendster -- updating my homepage, posting pictures, and viewing friends. I then realized that the response activities of my friends in Friendster had suddenly dropped tremendously. Friends started bugging me to switch to Facebook, as everyone I know already had. Damn, I hate being a no-choice fad follower. I was already satisfied with Friendster, but what's so good about it when friends no longer update their profiles or follow your page?

    I had a great leap of ego. Bypassing it sure was hard, especially for some moron like me who sticks so much to such a filthy word like ego! Like I have a choice.

    Now I'm with Facebook. Well actually I was impressed about it. It boosted real-time interaction with friends, especially instant chat. And they have made pages interactive with various games and quizzes. Friendster still dominates on homepage customization, though. I check my Freindster account once in a while. The only reason I always open Facebook is to play MafiaWars, wehehehe..

    More socializing websites are being created, but only some with be popular enough to rival Facebook or Friendster. And when another site dominates, I just hope I don't have to eat my ego again and be dragged into this neverending fad fair. Friendster and Facebook is enough (cross fingers).
